Running July 11-31, the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA (the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art) is a musical utopia for innovative musicians in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts. The festival is dedicated entirely to adventurous contemporary music. James will work with John Luther Adams as well as Julia Wolfe, David Lang, and Michael Gordon. Next week, James Burch (DMA ’16) appears as guest artist at the third annual Omaha Under the Radar festival. Running July 6-9, Omaha Under the Radar is an annual experimental performance festival in the Midwest presented by Analog Arts celebrating cultural innovators with performances throughout the city of Omaha. James will perform works for cello and electronics including Prés by Kaija Saariaho and Dissociation Sequences by Jon Fielder. For the second year in a row, a Longhorn Cellist has been named winner of the New York International Artists Competition. Ying Zhang (DMA ’16) took First Prize in the top category of the 2016 Cello Competition earlier this month, joining Yi Xin (DMA ’14), who won a year ago in the 2015 Cello Competition. NYIAC will present Ying, as well as winners from other instruments, in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in October 2016.
