Heard today during the second hour of the broadcast is the Longhorn Cellos’ performance of Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 for Soprano and Cello Ensemble with soprano Mela Dailey and conductor Peter Bay. The recording was made during a concert in Bates Recital Hall in Austin, TX on Friday, September 14, 2012.

Graduate student Yi Xin (DMA ’14) has been awarded a UT College of Fine Arts Continuing Fellowship for 2013-14. The scholarship includes a $12,000 stipend plus a tuition assistance benefit, a tuition waiver and a supplement for basic student medical insurance with the package totalling more than $21,000.

Yi’s last year of his doctoral degree at the UT Butler School of Music is an ambitious one: in addition to his DMA 2 Recital, where he will perform the same solo program that Janos Starker performed in Tokyo in 1988, and his Lecture-Recital on the Gyorgy Ligeti Solo Sonata, Yi plans to compete in the 2013 Leoš Janáček International Competition in Brno.

KMFATonight on the KMFA Classically Austin 89.5’s From the Butler School, hear Ying Zhang’s (DMA ’15) performance of the Steven Bryant Cello Concerto (2011) with conductor Robert Carnochan and the UT Wind Symphony. The recording was made during a concert in Bates Recital Hall in Austin, TX on Monday, December 3, 2012.

Francesco Mastromatteo (DMA ’12) has joined the string quartet Quartetto “Diomedee” based in Foggia, Italy. Francesco maintains his positions as Artistic Director of the Associazione Amici della Musica “G. Paisiello” in Lucera, Italy and as Concert Series Director of Classical Music for the World in Austin, TX. Francesco returned to Austin in October 2012 to perform solo (Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A minor) with the Balcones Community Orchestra.

Yuyoung Chung (DMA ’12) has joined the Civic Orchestra of Chicago—the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the only program of its kind affiliated with a major American orchestra—as a regular member during its 2012-13 season. Civic Orchestra concerts at Orchestra Hall are broadcast in Chicago on WFMT 98.7 FM and syndicated nationally to nearly three million listeners. More than 15 percent of the current members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra are Civic alumni.

Jinhee Han (BM ’07), who received her MM from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and is currently in the last year of her DMA studies there, was appointed as Adjunct Professor at Murray State University in September 2012. Francesco Mastromatteo (DMA ’12) has been appointed Professor of Chamber Music in the Conservatorio di Musica Umberto Giordano in Foggia, the second largest province in Italy. His residency is in Rodi Garganico, a seaside resort on the northern coast of the Gargano peninsula. Dr. Mastromatteo’s responsibilities include coordinating chamber music for all students at the conservatory including strings, winds, brass, pianists and vocalists.
