On March 20, 2026, at 7:30 PM PT, Doug Machiz (MM ’11), with his San-Francisco–based Friction Quartet, celebrates the release of a new album Proper Nostalgia. The project explores what happens when a string quartet treats the recording studio itself as part of the art, commissioning composers to create works designed specifically for the possibilities of modern recording rather than the concert hall alone.
The album features music by Andrew M. Rodriguez, Alex Dowling, Annika Sokolofsky, Michi Wiancko, and Isaac Io Shankler, recorded at both Skywalker Sound and Tiny Telephone to capture distinct sonic worlds for each piece. The result is a quartet album that leans into technology, intimacy, and imagination—music that invites listeners right up next to the instruments.
Congratulations to Doug and the whole Friction Quartet on the release! Give Proper Nostalgia a listen and RSVP to the listening party at Bandcamp.
